The four main components of a bearing mounting system are adapter sleeves, withdrawal sleeves, locknuts and lockwashers. These components are designed to interact seamlessly to allow bearings to be rapidly, accurately and securely mounted and withdrawn from cylindrical shafts without the need for expensive precision shaft seats - reducing installation and maintenance costs and complexity, both in new designs and in servicing.
Adapter sleeves are tapered, split-type inner ring assemblies that are used to mount self-aligning ball bearings and spherical roller bearings onto plain cylindrical shafts. The tightening of the locknut with wedge action causes the sleeve to contract onto the shaft, resulting in a strong interference fit that locks the bearing in place - no machining required.
Withdrawal sleeves are the opposite of adapter sleeves-they are used to safely and evenly withdraw bearings from tapered shaft seats without damaging the bearing or shaft. The withdrawal sleeve is pushed out from the back of the bearing, initially eliminating the interference fit and then allowing the bearing to be removed from the shaft damage free.
Locknuts-also known as KM nuts - are precision-machined nuts that mate with the threaded portion of the adapter sleeve or shaft. The locknut, once tightened with a hook spanner, pushes the bearing axially down the taper of the adapter sleeve and creates the proper interference fit, locking the bearing in place.

When mounting bearings with adapter sleeves, the adapter sleeve is placed on the shaft first, followed by the bearing, lockwasher and locknut. The locknut is driven up the required distance creating the interference fit. After tightening, the lockwasher tab is then bent into the locknut slot. Withdrawal sleeves and withdrawal nuts are used to dismount the assembly in a controlled manner.
Adapter sleeves, withdrawal sleeves, locknuts and lockwashers are common throughout all industries:
Adapter sleeves, withdrawal sleeves, locknuts and lockwashers comprise a reliable bearing mounting solution that is used in every branch of heavy and medium industry. When properly specified and installed, these products will provide secure bearing mounting and installation, ease of maintenance and extended machinery life-all critical components in a well-designed rotating machinery assembly. Be sure to use components from an approved supplier to guarantee precise dimensions, quality materials and complete compatibility with your bearings specification.
