ball-thrust-bearing

A ball thrust bearing is a type of rolling bearing that is manufactured to support pure axial (thrust) loads, which are forces applied parallel with a shaft. A ball thrust bearing is different from radial bearings, which are designed to support perpendicular loads - a ball thrust bearing uses a cage of steel balls positioned between two precision-machined rings (known as washers) to transfer axial load along the shaft. This distinctive structure makes it essential in applications where rotating or non-rotating components need to carry high axial loads with low friction.

Ball thrust bearings are available in single and double direction models, with bore sizes from 10 mm to more than 200 mm. They are used in machine tools, steering columns in automobiles, gearboxes, crane slewing rings, hydraulic jacks and many other industrial applications where axial loads must be supported.

What Is a Ball Thrust Bearing?

A ball thrust bearing is a type of thrust bearing, which is like a pump or a machine tool, transfers loads between rotating and stationary components in the machine. It is characterised by the use of balls as rolling elements, instead of cylindrical or tapered rollers.

Core Components
  • Shaft washer (inner ring): The inner ring that is mounted on the shaft.
  • Housing washer (outer ring): The fixed ring that is mounted in the housing or support.
  • Ball complement and cage: Steel balls, accurately spaced and retained by a stamped steel, brass or plastic cage to prevent contact and ensure equal load distribution.
  • Seals or shields (if required): To guard the components against dust, water ingress and leaking lubricants under harsh operating conditions.
Operating Principle

The balls roll on the grooved raceways of the washers to transmit an axial load with the least possible friction. As balls in a ball thrust bearing operate on one point contact (point contact) with the raceway, friction is lower and the speeds higher than roller thrust bearings, but the load carrying capacity per unit size of bearing is lower.

Types of Ball Thrust Bearings

1. Single-Direction Ball Thrust Bearing (Series 511xx / 512xx / 513xx / 514xx)

The most common configuration. These bearings can support axial loads only in one direction. They include one shaft washer, one housing washer and a ball and cage assembly. The design allows a flat housing washer for easy installation and compactness. Bore size range: 10 mm to 200 mm.

2. Bi-Directional Ball Thrust Bearing (Series 522xx / 532xx)

This bearing can transmit loads in both directions. It has a single shaft washer and two housing washers with two sets of balls and cages. This is the most common ball thrust bearing when the shaft thrust direction periodically reverses - as in screw-drive, reciprocating or machine-tool spindle clamping applications.

3. Spherical-Seat Ball Thrust Bearing (Series 532xx)

A variant of the double-direction type in which the housing washer has a spherical seating surface that matches a similarly shaped housing. This design can accommodate shaft misalignment of 2-3° without applying damaging bending loads to the bearing. Ideal for applications where exact alignment between the shaft and housing is difficult to achieve.

Ball Thrust Bearing Highlights

  • High Axial Load Capacity: Grooved raceway design spreads thrust to include all balls, allowing a small ball thrust bearing to support a high axial load.
  • Low Coefficient of Friction: Point contact between the balls and raceways keeps friction low, reduces heat build-up and enables higher speeds than a roller thrust bearing of the same capacity.
  • Dimensional Tolerance Classes: : Produced to ISO tolerance classes P0 (Normal), P6, P5 and P4 - meaning components are interchangeable and predictable in fit-up within machine designs.
  • Premium Bearing Steel: Raceway and balls are through-hardened AISI 52100 chromium-steel (100Cr6) for optimal fatigue life. Stainless steel (AISI 440C) is available for corrosive environments.
  • Flexible Lubrication Options: Suitable for grease (NLGI Grade 2) or oil lubrication; sealed types are lifetime greased.
  • Low Axial Space: Flat washer design means minimal axial space is needed, and the ball thrust bearing is perfect for a tight space assembly.
  • Acquiring a broad temperature range: Regular bearings have a working temperature range of -30C to +120C; high temperature stabilised (SHT) bearings can work up to +200C.
  • Available from International Brands: SKF, FAG, NSK, NTN, TIMKEN, KOYO, and IKO all produce ball thrust bearings to the same ISO sizes, allowing for interchangeability.

Applications of Ball Thrust Bearings

The ball thrust bearing is the most common bearing type used. Its smooth and efficient operation under pure axial loads makes it the preferred choice for the following industries:

  • Machine Tools & Manufacturing Equipment
Ball thrust bearings are used in the spindles of vertical mills, tail-stocks of lathes, drilling machines and jig-boring heads to support the axial cutting forces. These bearings' smooth operation and accuracy ensure superior finish and tolerances on machined components.
  • Automotive & Transportation
This bearing type is used in steering column systems at the bottom of the steering column to take up the force from the driver. Transmission clutch packs, intermediate supports for a car's propeller shaft and jack-screws also feature this bearing.
  • Industrial Gearboxes & Drives
Helical gearboxes and bevel gearboxes create large axial reaction forces as gear tooth geometry transforms torque. These forces are contained by a properly sized ball thrust bearing at each end of the shaft, preventing the gears from "creeping" on the shaft and maintaining the gear mesh and its life.
  • Hydraulic & Pneumatic Equipment
Hydraulic cylinder guides, piston-rod ends and pneumatic actuator shafts are subject to high and sometimes bi-directional axial loads. Bi-directional ball thrust bearings are commonly used in such applications.
  • Cranes, Hoists & Material Handling
Slewing rings, hoist drum shafts and travel wheels use large-diameter ball thrust bearings to support the load. Their low profile and low friction save energy in continuous lifting.
  • Food, Pharmaceutical & Chemical Processing
Hygienic-sealed ball thrust bearings in stainless steel and FDA-compliant lubricants are applied in mixers, centrifuges and filling machines, where chemical resistance and cleanliness are essential.

Whether you need a single replacement ball thrust bearing for a machine tool or a bulk supply for an OEM production line, Balaji Bearing India has the inventory, expertise, and logistics to meet your requirements-on time and at the right price.
