Features of Steering Bearings

  • Angular Load Capability: The Bearing at the steering column and kingpin should be able to withstand a combined load of both weight (radial) and the turning load (axial thrust) simultaneously, allowing for smooth steering with low friction.
  • Impact and Shock Resistance: They are designed to sustain high road shock and impact loads through the wheels and steering linkages, thereby avoiding premature failure.
  • Low Running Torque: Precision manufacturing is the key to low internal friction in bearings, which is essential to power steering systems to run efficiently, as well as to give the driver good road feel.
  • Integrated Sealing/Shielding:Since these bearings are exposed to water, salt, and dirt, they feature tougher, all-in-one seals and shields to protect the internal rolling parts and retain grease, ensuring a long, maintenance-free life.

Applications of Steering Bearing

  • Steering Column Support: The steering column features small ball bearings or needle bearings to support the steering column shaft, allowing the steering wheel to turn smoothly and easily.
  • Wheel Hub Assemblies: The hub of the wheel must be designed to accommodate a high-capacity roller or a unitised ball bearing that supports the entire weight of the vehicle and allows the wheel to rotate freely.
  • Kingpin Bearings (Heavy Vehicles): Thrust bearings (sometimes tapered, sometimes ball thrust bearings) are applied at the kingpin axis in heavy trucks and buses to accommodate the large vertical load weight and permit the knuckles of the steering to rotate easily.
  • Rack and Pinion Gears: Sometimes, small, specialised needle bearings or ball bearings are added to the rack and pinion assembly to direct the linear motion of the rack, as well as bear the input shaft.
